Excision (2012)

Director: Richard Bates, Jr.

Mein Gott!!!

This is a movie for people like me. Medical horror is becoming a solid genre in itself, but this one stands out more than most any.

Okay, this came out in 2012, and it may well be one of the most horrifying movies… or rather, tells one of the most horrifying stories of any movie I’ve seen. It is highly stylized like Nurse or American Mary, but it is seated in reality, which you’ll know is one of my favorite characteristics of a horror film. The visuals are excellent, the music is excellent, the acting is superb, and the cameos are so awesome, I can’t believe this one has slipped under the radar.

Ah ha! I found it on YouTube, the 2008 original!

It was a short film, 18 minutes.
Man, this was translated to long form so well! I want to watch the full-length again right now I love it so much, but that will have to wait. Unfortunately, it (2008 version) is low-res on every version I can find, but the story is very strong.

This kind of thing makes me want to make short films, in some capacity.

All I can figure is that it is too intense for most audiences.

This goes into the ‘must own’ category for me, if I ever find it in the retail wilderness. For a few of you, this is a gem of great value, but for most, it is too weird and extreme. I loved it and will have to put it on a three or four year rotation.

This has worked its way up to my Top Favorites list. Every person to whom I have recommended this movie and has watched it has not seen the same qualities that I have. I truly believe that this is one of the finest examples of reality-set horror captured on celluloid. I want to know your thoughts!
