Before I Wake (2016)

Director: Mike Flanagan

This movie was… incredible!

I avoided this one for a long time because of how stupid the screen shot is that Netflix chose, but I watched a preview and thought, ‘That is a completely different movie than what Netflix is suggesting!’ Man, I’m glad I gave it the shot it deserved!

I will start by saying, this has a satisfying ending. You read that right—a horror film with a satisfying ending. In fact, it may have been the perfect ending that actually gives the entire story more merit.

The actors killed it! I don’t know if I had seen a Kate Bosworth movie I have liked, but now I can say that I have. Also, this may be Thomas Jane’s greatest role in decades. In particular, there are some great scenes where the motivation must have been: shocked, scared, happy, and amazed, all at the same time. Another example is a very fine example of close-ups with still cameras. This description may not be the best, but it really sticks out. Now… to be fair, there is child acting, and you rarely get Haley Joel Osmond on set, but the adults, including X-Files’ Annabeth Gish, knocked it out of the park.

Watch this movie cold! If you can, try to avoid any spoilers, including reading the description on Netflix. Discover the story along with the cast, and you will be very pleased. This movie didn’t have to be a horror movie, and it would have been exactly as watchable. I thought of ‘What Dreams May Come,’ in terms of cinematography and parts of the concept, but who knows? Maybe this could happen.
